GIMP Icon Tutorial (My first!)

Going from this to this in what is possibly the simplest tutorial ever.

1) Crop the picture, sharpen it.
2) Duplicate the base three times.  Set the first two to screen.  Set the last to overlay at 50.
3) On the main GIMP interface, go to your chosen foreground color.  Change it to 091442
4) Create a new layer selecting foreground color on layer type fillDuplicate that layer four times so you have five copies of your blue layer.
5) Starting with the first (closest to the base) blue layer, set them to screen 100, subtract 100, screen 100, subtract 50, and screen 100.
6) Create a new white layer (ffffff) and set it to overlay at 40.  Flatten the image.
7) Optional - you can duplicate your base layer, bring it to the top and set it to overlay at 30.  It gives it a sharper image.
8) Optional - I added "Cristina" at the bottom after I flattened the image.  I used the very nice text "Ambulance".

And that's it!  I'd love to see your results! :-)

Great tutorial! Here's what I got:

nice job! I haven't tried it yet, but one thing that would be nice is an explanation of what each step accomplishes/why, that way, instead of just getting a result, I (anyone) can have a better grasp of why/how it works that way.

Thanks for the CS. You'll go to Heaven for that.

Did you know you look like a grease monkey in that icon, by the way? :-)

no problem, if I find a solution to their new web authentication thing I'll let you know. ps, that's not me, it's my dad, only he's like 28 there.

Really? I'm slightly amazed. Didn't mean to call your dad a grease monkey....

no problem, he was sort of, his dad was a mechanic and he worked coal mines for a number of years. What's up with you and C? He seems distressed.

Nothing's up. Well, something was up for a couple of days, but nothing's up now. Long story short: I blame the classic Daddy Issues.

Oh I see, you're not worthy, can't spend time together and it's your fault, he could be wrong about his feelings etc... makes sense, but you better be careful not to push too hard and throw something away, if I have any business saying that that is.

k-dizza

I talked to C a while ago. Heard what happened. I'm sorry. Really. Believe me when I say I know how shitty it is. Anyways, I know we're not that close and all, but if you ever need an understanding ear just hit me up. That's all. n

Re: k-dizza

You know I appreciate that, Nick. But don't go sending your sympathies to me, seeing how it's my fault and all. I'm pretty sure he hates me now. That's ok. I deserve it. But thanks anyway.

Re: k-dizza

I sympathize with all involved. Especially if it was a fight-y situation. Besides, your 'I'm tough and unassailable' routine won't work here, I did date L after all. She was the master of that. Until I broke her of course. I don't think he can hate anyone btw. it's just not in him.

Re: k-dizza

I'm not tough and unassailable. Where'd you get that idea?

Re: k-dizza

"don't go sending your sympathies to me, seeing how it's my fault and all" from that. Though that was sort of a joke too. Sort of.
